The Mariner
The Mariner represents an oversized set of anchor chain links which pays tribute to Northwest Florida’s rich, maritime history. It was created in partnership with Artel Gallery, Razor’s Edge Designs, and the city of Gulf Breeze. It is made of fiberglass and stands 10′ tall and 16′ wide. It is coated with resin infused with bronze powder. It is scheduled to be installed in 2024 at the base of the new Chappie James Memorial bridge which connects Pensacola to Gulf Breeze. This sculpture will become part of a public art initiative set forth by the city of Gulf Breeze https://cityofgulfbreeze.us/living-in/public-art/

The inspiration for this sculpture was a photograph taken in 1857 by Robert Howlett of Isambard Kingdom Brunel standing before the launching chain of the SS Great Eastern (above, left). Early concept sketch (center), and small, resin, 3D model alongside full size links in process (right).

Shown above are single link installations. On the left, an appearance in Old East Hill, Pensacola; and, on the right, in front of Milton High School (sponsored by MHS NJROTC).
